On breathing

2016
Porcelain, stoneware

These pieces reflect my first year of getting acquaintance with clay. I am fascinated by the punishing, steady speed of the wheel in contrast with the hesitant effort of hand, where all balance depends upon a consistent rhythm of breath. To trace this compromise between wheel and hand, I embed small pieces of contrasting clay to the parent block of clay, resulting in lines that arcing and bowing in slow, imperfect articulation across the surface.
